65th Commemoration of the Tibet National Uprising
Ottawa, March 10, 2024: Tibetans will gather on Parliament Hill on Sunday, March 10, in commemoration of the 65thanniversary of the Tibetan National Uprising. The commemoration will be followed by a march to the Chinese Embassy where a vigil will take place.
Each year Tibetans mark this pivotal moment in their history by holding vigils, marches and demonstrations in cities around the world. In Ottawa, Tibetans from Montreal, Ottawa and Toronto will come together to mark the event.

Background: On March 10, 1959 more than 100,000 Tibetans gathered in the Tibetan capital of Lhasa, to prevent Chinese soldiers from abducting His Holiness the Dalai Lama. On March 17, the Dalai Lama made the difficult decision to leave the city and seek refuge in India. By the evening of March 19, 1959 fighting had broken out in Lhasa (1).
