Statement from the Canada Tibet Committee on the Earthquake in Tibet

Toronto, January 7, 2025 – The Canada Tibet Committee (CTC) expresses its deepest condolences to the victims of the devastating earthquake that struck Dingri County, Shigatse Prefecture, Tibet. This tragedy has resulted in the loss of at least 126 lives, with many others injured, and has caused widespread destruction to homes and infrastructure. Our thoughts and prayers are with the families of the deceased and all those affected by this disaster.

The earthquake, measuring 7.1 on the Richter scale according to the U.S. Geological Survey, and accompanied by over 50 aftershocks, has left thousands displaced in a high-altitude region where temperatures have dropped below freezing. This only exacerbates the dire conditions for survivors, who are now grappling with the destruction of over 1,000 homes in this sparsely populated yet culturally significant area.

We commend the immediate efforts of first responders and volunteers working under challenging conditions to rescue those trapped and assist the injured. We also call on the Chinese government to ensure transparency and accountability in its relief operations.

The region of Shigatse is not only home to thousands of Tibetans but also holds deep cultural and religious significance. It is known for the Tashi Lhunpo Monastery, the traditional seat of the Panchen Lama, Gedhun Choekyi Nyima, which Chinese authorities forcibly disappeared in 1995. The absence of the Panchen Lama is a poignant reminder of the suffering endured by the Tibetan people under ongoing repression, even as they face natural disasters.

We echo the words of His Holiness the Dalai Lama, who expressed his deep sadness at the tragic loss of life and the extensive damage caused by this disaster: “I am deeply saddened to learn of the devastating earthquake that struck Dingri in Tibet and the surrounding regions this morning. It has resulted in the tragic loss of many lives, numerous injuries, and extensive destruction to homes and property.”

We acknowledge and thank Canada’s Foreign Minister Melanie Joly’s statement of support and solidarity with the victims of the deadly earthquake in Tibet.
