April 29, 2025 – The Canadian election marks the beginning of a new era for Tibet advocacy in Canada. The results signal fresh opportunities to build alliances and renew multi-party collaboration supporting the Tibetan people.
The Canada Tibet Committee (CTC) looks forward to working closely with all parties represented in the House of Commons. In this respect, the Parliamentary Friends of Tibet (PFT), under the leadership of its current chair, James Maloney, will continue to play a key role in fostering cross-party cooperation on Tibet-related issues.
In addition, the Bloc Québécois will drive discussion about self-determination in Tibet, building on the party motion supporting the determination rights of the Tibetan people last year in Canada’s Parliament.
“I’m looking forward to working with all parties in this new Parliament,” said Sherap Therchin, Executive Director of the CTC. “I believe this moment presents a renewed opportunity for Canada to strengthen its support for the rights of the Tibetan people, especially their economic, environmental, and cultural rights.”
As Canada faces shifting global economic dynamics, it is vital to reaffirm our commitment to international human rights and sustainable development.
The CTC will seek new opportunities for dialogue with Chinese authorities around shared concerns, including climate, energy, and trade. We count on the federal government, under Prime Minister Mark Carney’s leadership, to help facilitate constructive engagement on these vital issues.
