Sikyong Penpa Tsering discusses Tibetan human rights at Concordia University, meets Bloc Québécois Leaders

Montreal, April 11, 2024 — The Montreal Institute of Genocide and Human Rights Studies (MIGS) at Concordia University hosted an engaging roundtable discussion today featuring Sikyong Penpa Tsering. Addressing members of MIGS, Sikyong  Penpa Tsering articulated concerns regarding the systemic suppression of Tibetan identity by China, discussed the geopolitical importance of Tibet, and outlined the challenges faced by the international community in dealing with China. Kyle Mathew, Executive Director of MIGS, expressed gratitude to Sikyong Tsering for his valuable insights on human rights issues related to China. Dr. Namgyal Choedup, Representative of His Holiness the Dalai Lama, accompanied Sikyong Tsering.

Later in the day, Sikyong Penpa Tsering and Dr. Namgyal Choedup met with the Honorable Yves-François Blanchet, leader of the Bloc Québécois, and MP Alexis Brunelle-Duceppe. The meeting focused on the critical need to uphold the rights of the Tibetan people to self-determination, and to preserve their language, culture, and religious practices. Notably, Mr. Blanchet had earlier this year engaged with Dr. Choedup during a visit to Washington DC.

Also participating in the meeting were Samphe Lhalungpa, Chair of the Canada Tibet Committee (CTC); Luisa Durante, Vice-Chair; and Sherap Therchin, Executive Director.
