Dear Mr./Ms. ____________, MP:

SUPPORT BILL C-300 ON CORPORATE ACCOUNTABILITY

As your constituent, I am writing to let you know that I strongly support Bill C-300, an Act respecting Corporate Accountability for the Activities of Mining, Oil and Gas Corporations in Developing Countries, which will be taken up again when parliament resumes in the fall. I am writing to urge you to cast your vote in favour of this bill.

Bill C-300 responds to a need—recognized in the June 2005 parliamentary report of the Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Trade, and later in the recommendations of the National Roundtables on Corporate Social Responsibility—for the adoption of mechanisms, in Canada, to ensure that Canadian extractive companies will act responsibly and respect international standards for human rights and environmental law.
Over 75% of the world’s mining companies are headquartered in Canada while mining and exploration companies based in Canada account for 43 percent, by far the lions share, of global exploration expenditures. At the same time the number of social conflicts related to this sector is increasing. By providing a coherent regulatory framework for Canadian government agencies with respect to Canadian extractive corporations operating overseas, Bill C-300 seeks to address important protection gaps and breaches of human, indigenous or environmental rights while positioning Canada as a leader in best practices in corporate accountability overseas.
Bill C-300 has garnered a huge amount of support across the country. It is supported by Canadian Network for Corporate Accountability (CNCA), an organization which includes Amnesty International Canada, the United Church of Canada, the Canadian Council for International Co-operation, the Steelworkers Humanity Fund, the Canadian Labour Congress, KAIROS Ecumenical Justice Initiatives, and many other organizations.
As my elected MP, I urge you to stand firm for environmental and human rights by supporting Bill C-300.

I would like to thank you for your attention to this matter, and look forward to hearing your response, regarding what you plan to do with respect to this request. Finally I would like to take this opportunity to wish you a great summer.

Yours truly,
