St. John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador
Letter to the editor of St. John’s Telegraph
Susan Cove
I was part of a small enthusiastic group who were fortunate enough to be truly inspired by David Kay, a remarkable young national level Canadian athlete in rowing and cycling as he left Mile Zero in St. John’s, Newfoundland on July 13, 2008 on a 46 day bicycle trip of a lifetime from Coast to Coast in Canada – to arrive in Victoria, BC on August 24th the day of the closing ceremonies of the Olympic Games in Bejing China. Remarkably, David, a humble, amazing athlete and individual is traveling light without any support vehicle – just David, his bicycle, a tent, sleeping gear, rain clothes, a change of clothes, a big smile, wonderful spirit and a heartfelt cause.
David’s journey is called RACE FOR RIGHTS to encourage people to reflect on the Olympic spirit and China’s responsibility to improve human rights as the host of the games. Dave was motivated by the Dalai Lama’s message of compassion and non-violent struggle and wanted to deliver this message to Canadians through the simple act of cycling.
China invaded Tibet 59 years ago in 1949, the same year Newfoundland & Labrador joined the country of Canada. While Newfoundland Labrador has the opportunity to celebrate its individuality and culture, the same is not true in Tibet – where individual and societal rights are threatened.
While in Newfoundland & Labrador, David will be riding in the memory of an unidentified Tibetan girl reportedly shot dead by China’s People’s Armed Police (PAP) outside the southern gate of the Tsuklakhang temple, in Lhasa, at about 12:00 noon somewhere around May 20 (source Tibet Custom, UK).
So, if you see a bicyclist wearing a silver bicycle helmet, and with a red triangular caution flag and a yellow Tibetan flag on a pole on the rear of his bicycle, you’ll know you’ve met an outstanding and compassionate individual, athlete, Canadian and citizen of the world. Wishing you a wonderful adventure as you peacefully champion this important cause. Godspeed new friend, on your remarkable journey.
Please remember David in your thoughts and prayers on his travels. To learn more about David’s cause and his journey and to keep in touch with his progress, check www.tibet.ca//en/raceforrights Thank you. Susan Cave
& I sincerely thank David Kay & the Canada Tibet Committee for this wonderful experience.
